Vacant Shores Unveil Brooding Leftfield Piece ‘Wasted Breath’

There’s something incredibly cathartic and liminal in ‘Wasted Breath’. Built on brooding, cosmic soundscapes and nostalgic drum machines, the track finds its unique identity through eclectic trip-hop and leftfield electronica, eventually landing on a gloomy character that’s dreamy and evocative. Penned by Bristol-based outfit Vacant Shores, ‘Wasted Breath’ is then crowned by lead singer Suzy’s angelic, spacious vocals, wrapping us all into a luscious aural bath that’s a joy to listen to.

Originally founded by creatives AJ ‘Sid’ Sidford and Jon Elliott, Vacant Shores returned only last year after a sizeable hiatus, with Suzy and Riley completing the group’s lineup as a quartet. Their cavernous, ethereal flair well fits the British city they call home, a place that played a leading role in the trip-hop movement (Massive Attack, Portishead). That said, Vacant Shores incorporate a louder electronic component into their material, a quality that marks their music as modern and seemingly quite industrial.

Speaking about the deep lyricism behind ‘Wasted Breath’, the English band explain: “It is about society’s growing inability to focus and properly listen, which seems to be caused by social media bombardment and information overload. Suzy has noticed that she rarely speaks to people without them quickly being distracted. She recently reflected on this and how addictive social media can be.”
