Someone might define ‘Réminiscence’ as world music, yet we prefer to look at it as the music that some folks might instead regard as familiar. Of course, to a Westerner’s ear, the album will certainly sound pretty eclectic, a snapshot of traditional African rhythms and Nzebi language, a stable Bantu language spoken primarily in southern Gabon and parts of the Republic of Congo by the Nzebi people. Behind such a wonderful record, we find talented songstress Tita Nzebi. Enjoying a burgeoning career that took her performing across the globe, Nzebi stands out thanks to her powerful and expressive vocals.
‘Réminiscence’ is the perfect example of that, a ten-track record that unveils a wealth of moods and traditional theming. Introduced by its title track, the album unveils a mystical call-and-response between Tita herself and an African choir, an absolutely hypnotic and lush listening experience. There’s also a certain melancholy in it, although it is hidden behind all the musical goodness. Overall, we are impressed with the album’s recording quality: crisp and dynamic, ‘Réminiscence’ highlights all of the vocal nuances championed by Nzebi.
Focused on themes of identity and belonging, the record is particularly rooted in Tita Nzebi’s Gabonese roots, providing an overarching lyrical layer that is nostalgic as it is meaningful. As we are told: “It offers a profound reflection on themes such as transmission, maternal wisdom, spiritual elevation, and the duty of remembrance. It not only pays homage to Gabonese identity but also serves as a global production that celebrates the enduring connections that bind us together.”
