We’ll be honest and admit to you all that this is the first time we’ve come across The Society Of Rockets. It’s our bad, really, as a quick glance at the project’s longstanding career reveals a psychedelic outfit that has rallied quite an audience around itself, even gaining a glowing Pitchfork review for their 2010 LP ‘Future Factory’. Fast forward to today, and we have the chance to familiarise ourselves with The Society Of Rockets thanks to the group’s latest album, ‘A Pocketful of Phables’.
Rockets’ Instagram bio is rather clear about what the project stands for: “science-fiction retro-futurist rock and roll band”… That’s your first clue, putting The Society Of Rockets’ sonic eclecticism on full display. What unfolds in ‘A Pocketful of Phables’ is a monstrous seventeen-track journey full of nostalgic influences and blissful textures, with a heightened degree of psychedelic charge. Roaring psych-pop guitars and indie references help listeners immerse themselves in an album that feels almost escapist, otherworldly, if you will.
Recorded and mixed in San Francisco’s legendary Hyde Street Studios, the album contains the imaginative artistry of head honcho Joshua Babcock and his hypnotic, mesmerising vocals. ‘She Lives In A Museum’ takes the lead single role, being decisively one of the most surf-pop-oriented episodes on the record.
