The House Flies Share Darker Comeback Single ‘Sweet Foxhound’

It’s been a while since we heard from The House Flies. The Midwest-based group last graced our pages just a year ago, when we celebrated their album ‘Mannequin Deposit’ as “the perfect recipe for a project that takes pride in its shoegaze and post-punk explorations”. Since then, the American band has been relatively quiet, seemingly at work on the next chapter of their artistic career. Well, a new chapter starts today, with The House Flies’ comeback single, ‘Sweet Foxhound’, being released into the world.

Shipped with a hypnotic music video featuring dog masks and a timely live performance, ‘Sweet Foxhound’ sees The House Flies taking a gloomier, more reflective direction, both sonically and lyrically. From an aural standpoint, the addition of a second guitar to the group’s lineup adds a plethora of textures and a gloomier, darker sound, still oriented towards alt-rock and shoegaze, just with a heightened noise component and decadent flair. Distortions are louder and more prominent, especially in the chorus. Verses reek of smoky and fringe new wave influences.

New guitarist Burnie Eckardt joins Alex Riggen, Ozzie Woods, and Nick Pompou, giving The House Flies a new path forward. That said, the keen listener will still be familiar with them; they have changed, but not so much. Originally written during the ‘Mannequin Deposit’ sessions, ‘Sweet Foxhound’ also initiate a journey to the project’s next album. Although for now, there’s no rush, let’s just enjoy the single.
