Instead, they transform guitar-coded nostalgia into a sonic brand, declaring themselves as a “retro-flavoured rock band”. The South Korean duo has recently unveiled their debut effort, ‘Eclipse’, a single that feels electrifying and vintage, melodic and slightly lo-fi. There’s a retro-sheen around the track, a sonic paste that reminds us of the AOR rock of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s.
Honestly, ‘Eclipse’ is a bit of a time capsule. Echoing Yes and Dire Straits, among others, The Expo offer precise, malleable vocals with an anthemic twist, fully embracing period-corrected production artefacts and the right amount of gated reverbs. Genres are not a deal breaker for the Korean project, and we are likely to see The Expo explore other musical avenues pretty soon.
Overall, we appreciate the duo’s simple yet functional outlook. They are not here to follow trends or mainstream formulas; instead, they embrace a timeless, evergreen identity that’s bound to resonate with a wide audience. It certainly did with us.
