The keen reader might remember British indie outfit The Avelons from a feature we published last summer, praising ‘Follow’ as “looking forward with decisively more emotional flair”. Back then, the North East-based bunch showcased their abilities of being equally hard-hitting and evocative, committing to guitar-coded euphoria with a great deal of melodism and meaningful flair in it. While the group has been silent for the best part of a year, their comeback happened just a few days ago, with ‘Rubbernecker’ releasing into the world.
A potent, intense offering, ‘Rubbernecker’ sounds exactly like a The Avelons track. Opened by an all-out, euphoric intro, the record then shifts between kinetic verses and explosive breakdowns, the perfect balance between relatable, introspective lyricism and contemporary indie sleaze. Remnants of classic Britpop influences are well alive throughout the record, a sign that the British band doesn’t just exist in a vacuum; they have been listening to a lot of like-minded material.
Delving deeper into the origin story that propels ‘Rubbernecker’, lead singer Jack explains: “Way back when, I was in a bit of a car crash situation that I knew I shouldn’t have been in, but I kept going back. It’s about being drawn to someone who feels powerful and irresistible, but also dangerous or unhealthy. There’s this push-pull between desire and self-control, wanting them, but also knowing you probably shouldn’t. I’m sure a lot of people will find this experience familiar!”
