Not all records are equal. Some are born from a pure desire to achieve commercial success. Others stem from a deep desire for personal expression, often steeped in strong emotions and unfiltered authenticity. ‘Galaxy’ belongs to the latter category. Penned by German singer-songwriter Talking To Sophie, the piece boasts a deeply evocative and poignant outlook, being originally inspired by a tragic personal occurrence.
Wrapped in a potent cathartic aura, ‘Galaxy’ appears rather laidback and understated, at least at first glance. Built on indie and dreamy guitar tones, the single reveals its transformative potential only in its lyricism, echoing Talking To Sophie’s painful processing of negative feelings. As he explains, the song was sparked by “the loss of my son, which has accompanied me for exactly a year now, and pushed me into a deep hole. Writing ‘Galaxy’ was one of the first steps to process the death (though it’s not the first song I released after). It took time to make the loss more public.”
We cannot imagine what the German creative must have felt at the time: losing a child is one of the most harrowing experiences one can endure. Yet, music and art can provide a gentle relief, allowing us all to slowly come to terms with humanity’s darkest corners. ‘Galaxy’ is the result of such an ethos.
