The keen reader might remember Canadian genius SUUNCAAT. Writing about her debut effort earlier this summer (‘Neighbourhood’), we celebrated it as “a riveting smorgasbörd of influences and production techniques set to innovate and revolutionize.” We stand by our words: the nuanced production work and fresh vocal treatment give the project an absolutely unique perspective.
Now, SUUNCAAT returns with a new offering, ‘Salad Years’. Less punchy and chaotic than its predecessor, the track exhibits a rather playful character, moving with charisma and confidence while being crowned by the Montreal-based songstress’ robotic and otherworldly vocals. Blending classic synth-pop with veiled hyper-pop energy and early ‘2000 influences, SUUNCAAT manages to produce a real banger.
It might not be right for the dancefloor this time around, but it surely gives us a wider indication of her songwriting talent. Among honey-like melodies and catchy riffs, the record is a true earworm. Speaking about the inspiration behind it, SUUNCAAT explains: “Actually a very sad song but also very upbeat and humoristic. It’s just a self-deprecatory joke.”
