A highly unique and quirky offering, ‘Get On With It’ marks the latest offering from Californian sonic wizard and explorer sunsweater. Included in the overarching EP ‘Radio Soaker’, ‘Get On With It’ feels sharp, daring and bold. Introduced by a groovy drum machine-style beat, the piece further develops sunsweater’s cutthroat guitar tone, constantly oscillating between indie slickness and darker, rock-flavoured riffing. The Orange County-based creative also boasts quite good vocals, which on this occasion feel rather distant and otherworldly, as if he were living in a weird fever dream, one that’s highly hypnotising and meaningful.
The occasional synth-powered element rises on the arrangement, creating a stark contrast between the roughness of the guitars and the comfortable roundness of luscious electronic bubbles. Yet, it all works together very well, providing a fitting counterpoint to the complex lyricism behind the piece. You see, there’s a reason if the record’s whole mood is so leftfield and dystopian: sunsweater writes about a mourning father, suffering the loss of his wife while becoming distant from his daughter.
sunsweater speaks of ‘emotional tension’, and that’s certainly a perfect description of it. There’s a constant push and pull between whimsical aural matter and starker lyricism. In a way, it’s as if the father in question were struggling to be present in his own reality, instead wandering through abstract thoughts with carefree confusion. As the American musician explains: “Musically, I wanted to build a song that took the listener on a journey”.
