We got to know The Afro Nick earlier this year; known for his nuanced guitar skills and sharp vocals, the Greek, US-based rocker seems to have struck gold recently, fully benefiting from his three-dimensional creativity and wide imagination. Now, he’s back on our pages with a Greece-based longstanding project, Stray Blue, a collaboration with fellow musicians George Athanas on bass and George Papazoglou on drums. Active since 2005, the band has just celebrated their twentieth anniversary, an occasion that could be celebrated only with a new record.
‘Wake Up & Smile (Acoustic Version)’ takes the cake. A wonderfully charming and groovy episode, the record showcases all the musical prowess the group has to offer. Stray Blue focus on simple, catchy melodies and dance-oriented, laidback rhythm, a formula that makes for an energetic and vibrant single. The song’s lyricism is soothing and gentle, spreading a message of hope and unity – just like the project itself.
‘Moody Sky’ feat Yoed Nir is also present as a wonderful b-side, embarking on a folk-flavoured sonic journey, one that’s nostalgic and poignant at the same time. Both tracks are available on the newly released 7-inch limited edition vinyl, out now. Speaking about their overall ethos, Stray Blue explain: “Our philosophy is rooted in the belief that music is a universal language that unites people across backgrounds and borders.”
