It’s been a strong couple of years for SonicFluxx. In fact, it’s been barely twelve months since his debut eponymous album, yet the quality and purpose behind his music have grown exponentially, a sign that the Los Angeles-based creative is taking his artistic career rather seriously. This year, ‘Walk Away’ marked the beginning of a new era for the project, now confirmed further by his latest effort, ‘Idol’, his most striking and hard-hitting piece to date.
From a sonic standpoint, ‘Idol’ starts off as it is meant to go on: bold and fierce. An industrial-coded electronic production embraces gloominess and fuzzy synths, then gets crowned by SonicFluxx’s malleable, luscious vocals. The listening experience is refreshing yet also theatrical, not in an overly poignant way. The stuttering chorus has a striking similarity to an eurodance track from the early ‘2000s; we are not sure whether that’s a reference to that era or just a random occurrence. Either way, we love it.
Delving deeper into the meaningful ethos that propels the record, we are told: “It explores the dangerous allure of obsession, control, and the thin line between adoration and destruction.” In other words, ‘Idol’ is a bit of forbidden fruit, musically speaking. An intense, sombre anthem packed with grit yet also elegance, a clash of opposites that somehow appears to work very well. SonicFluxx has done it again, and there are no signs he’ll be stopping being his authentic self anytime soon!
