The keen reader will be aware of our love for anything hazy and expansive. Anything with a high degree of escapism, anything we can lose ourselves in. ‘Beachball’ caters to such needs perfectly, offering a striking point of entry into Softer’s feverish, cathartic artistry. Oscillating between alt-rock and shoegaze, the Los Angeles-based outfit offers a sonic imprint that’s perhaps more akin to dream pop, especially given its relatability and playfulness.
Yet, distortions are sharp and drums are fast-rolling, with washed-out vocals and blurry textures giving Softer’s material an otherworldly character. ‘Beachball’ is the perfect evidence of that. The group’s latest effort, the track mirrors the aforementioned contrast between misty, airy vocals and fast-paced, dynamic rock matter. Moreover, Belinda Cai’s lead tone is often drenched in a wealth of harmonies and reverb, with angelic melodies offering an artistic chiaroscuro that’s hard to forget.
Mikey Macapagal, Eric Fabbro, and Josh Solomon complete the talented lineup. Speaking about the inspiration behind the piece, Softer explain: “‘Beachball’ reflects on a space that is post-heartbreak and pre-starting over. It’s about reflecting on the pain of a toxic relationship (romantic or otherwise), recognising you have to move on, and actually trying. It’s about relocating somewhere new, and experiencing a sort of baptism — in this case, on the shores of California beaches.”
