Social Gravy only returned in November 2024 after a four-year hiatus, yet they are fiercely driving their project forward, eventually landing on a substantial EP expected in the upcoming months. The band’s comeback single was proudly reviewed by Mesmerized as “surely leaving a lasting mark” – all the signs of a glorious return were there. ‘These Are The Times’ confirms our suspicions, while widening the sonic references and unveiling the Californian band’s brighter side.
Leaving behind fierce rock tones and cut-throat distortions, ‘These Are The Times’ embraces a lighter and more controlled aural livery, oscillating between pop-rock lusciousness and funk-powered playfulness. It’s a positive single, one that’s highly hypnotising and catchy. It also showcases Social Gravy’s songwriting expertise. Driven by creatives Brad Kohn and Vee Bordukov, the project is perhaps transforming, but surely not forgetting its rock’n’roll origins.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the lyricism, Social Gravy eloquently explain: “The track is about Brad’s former girlfriend who became the muse for the song with her eyes-wide off-hand quip ‘These are the times, Bradley, these are the times!’ after an award ceremony in the sunny Santa Monica, California.” Overall, ‘These Are The Times’ feels like the perfect summer pick-me-up, a carefree, positive anthem aimed at any like-minded listener out there.
