Snake Orange Cake’s ‘Hair’ Builds a Unique Aural Space

It’s been a crucial year for Snake Orange Cake, at least so far. It’s the year when the world gets to reckon with her striking creative entity. Hailing from Berlin, the project sees Åland-raised Julia Carlsson embracing a highly eclectic and organic artistic formula; leftfield-driven goodness oscillating between spoken words and electronica. It all maintains an approachable and digestible aural livery, with Snake Orange Cake flourishing among a flurry of looper, sampler and synthetisers.

‘Hair’ is the perfect evidence of that. In it, Carlsson’s vocals are used as a cathartic tool; they never overpower the sonic landscape, instead gently guiding it into a more expressive and relatable direction. Snake Orange Cake doesn’t quite sound like anyone else, a sign that the project is onto something real. We are looking forward to hearing more.

Delving deeper into ‘Hair’, Carlsson explains: “It evokes the sensation of standing still while the world spins – calm, content, and alive. Growing out your hair becomes a metaphor for transformative acceptance – of yourself, of time, of life.”
