Italy has always had a special relationship with shoegaze, something that should perhaps be studied; how come they are so keen to escape reality? While we wait for the answer, let’s also look at the bright side, which is the sheer amount of good records emerging from the so-called Belpaese. One of those records can be identified in ‘Eight and a Half’, the latest effort by unapologetic dreamers Six Impossible Things.
Formed by the bold and introspective imagination of Nicky Fodritto and Lorenzo di Girolamo, the project boasts quite an extensive catalogue under their name, being active since 2017. More recently, they have shifted from a duo to a full band dimension, embarking on a seemingly new phase of the group’s longstanding history, an era that appears incredibly vivid and striking. ‘Eight and a Half’ is the perfect evidence of that, with its free-form structure and heightened attention to larger-than-life guitar tones and hazy, hypnotising vocals.
We particularly appreciate the contrast between such spacious and massive guitars and the overarching electronic soundscapes, contributing to the record’s poignant, evocative character. The hidden layer of piano chords is a genius addition, an element that’s ever so heart-shaking and melancholic. Turns out that those mysterious ‘six impossible things‘ are indeed possible, as the Italian band proudly showcases.
They are also gearing up for an upcoming single, ‘Nevermore’.
