Despite all the pain and self-doubts they cause, heartbreaks often spark powerful artistic pieces. There’s something about the need for personal expression in a distressing situation… it makes for good art. ‘Moody’ is the perfect evidence of that. Written during and in the aftermath of a breakup, the record sees Fort Lauderdale-based producer and songwriter Silky Vibe embrace a nocturne, intimate flair, penning five tracks that blur the line between R&B, trap, and lo-fi atmospheric beats.
It all comes together in a cathartic, evocative EP, a slice of poised and gentle goodness in an overly chaotic reality. Yet, there are frequent melancholic tinges within it, a sign that Silky Vibe is indeed trying to process something, sharing uncomfortable inner truths with anyone keen to listen. From a production standpoint, ‘Moody’ is certainly minimalistic, with skeleton beats layered on top of solitary guitars and dreamy textures. We’d argue that’s the perfect aural universe for the Floridian’s calming vocals.
Recorded in a bedroom studio by Silky Vibe in true DIY fashion, the record features all performances by the artist himself. Delving deeper into the EP, he explains: “Most of the songs were written while reflecting on the stages of realising a relationship is coming to an end. Hence the name, ‘Moody’, as it felt almost like mood swings to go from realisation of the end coming up, yearning, struggling with acceptance, and ultimately accepting and moving on.”
