For the uninitiated, Shy Bairn Records is an independent record label based in the UK and established in 2018. Alongside sister imprint Guttersnipe Recordings, Shy Bairn has been instrumental in highlighting a heap of unheard musical talents from all walks of life and society. Take, for instance, Charlotte Grayson and Lurcher. One being a fierce vocal powerhouse and the other a sharp, cut-throat indie outfit, both projects now share a unique quality: being remixed by in-house producer Mark ‘Foll’ Folland.
Celebrating the label’s seventh anniversary, Ed from Shy Bairns Records explains: “We’ve released 36 Singles, 3 LPs and 3 EPs from 8 bands over the past 7 years, something we’re pretty proud of.” They should indeed be proud of it; the music industry landscape is brutal out there, and one needs a whole lot of motivation to make it work. ‘Get Outta My yard’ – performed by Charlotte Grayson & The Shame Areas – and ‘Hartlesspool’ – performed by Lurcher – serve as source material for Foll’s eclectic and quirky remixes.
While ‘Get Outta My Yard’ retains a somewhat uplifting and fierce character, with grooves turned up to the max and a certain retro flair, ‘Hartlesspool’ instead is seen diving into its already dark and fuzzy character, making for a hard-hitting, unrelentless slice of charisma that’s hard to resist. Overall, the remixes act as a celebratory release, also providing an excuse to explore more into Shy Bairn and Guttersnipe Recordings’ wider catalogues.
