Moving on from his longtime project, The Ruffians, New York-based singer-songwriter Sean Griffin is now taking matters into his own hands, presenting a solo project that’s as hypnotising and meaningful as ever. ‘People Are Mad’ is the perfect evidence of that. Griffin’s debut effort, the song is socially playful and lyrically committed, contrasting an Irish-flavoured folk-pop instrumental with contemporary and relevant storytelling. Sean’s raw, dynamic vocals are the perfect match for such a vibrant piece.
One thing that’s really striking in the record is the balance between its upbeat, acoustic energy and the seemingly ‘doomed’ songwriting, with Griffin focusing on climate change and all the broken promises we’ve had till now. It’s an aural chiaroscuro that showcases the American creative’s deep lyrical genius and observant character. We expect to find the same quality in the project’s upcoming album, together with heightened eclecticism.
Delving deeper into his new solo endeavour, Griffin explains: “I had all these songs I’d written over the years that weren’t right for my other band. They needed to see some light.” Signed to Right Track Records, Sean will be travelling to the UK this autumn for a run of yet-to-be-announced live shows.
