A nostalgic, soothing piece, ‘Heima’ is a wonderful display of Sara Magnúsdóttir’s skilful, nuanced artistry. A gifted Hammon organist, the Icelandic musician has taken a keen interest in the global jazz scene, moving to New York in order to advance her musical studies. Having done that, Magnúsdóttir now appears ready to take the next step in an already successful career, becoming a bandleader in her own right.
‘Heima’ is exactly that. With an Icelandic title, the track finds its meaningful ethos as a nostalgic celebration of the concept of ‘home’, a theme certainly close to Sara’s heart. As she eloquently explains: “Home’ is something I have started to consider more of a feeling and less of a place. Because it can be pretty sad to feel like you are never truly ‘home’, believe me, I‘ve definitely cried in an aeroplane about it.”
Such heartfelt imagery is the foundational basis for Magnúsdóttir’s nuanced composition. Embarking on a soothing, gentle and partly melancholic journey, ‘Heima’ delivers a listening experience like no other, wrapping us all into wholesome, slow-moving instrumental goodness, all guided by the Icelandic musician’s masterful Hammond tones. What’s more, the single anticipates an upcoming album, expected in August. A special performance at Reykjavík Jazz Festival is also scheduled for August 30th.
