It’s great to see Robert O’Connor back with another wholesome release. Hailing from Dublin, we have come to know the Irish troubadour as a fiercely committed artistic figure, a figure that doesn’t worry too much about trends or popular formulas, instead pursuing pure, unfiltered artistry. It was all perfectly clear back in January, when we wrote about O’Connor’s latest album ‘Swimming Against The Tide’. It’s even clearer now, as we observe Robert teaming up with viral American producer Luke Kondak for ‘What A Time To Be Alive’.
Known for remixing popular songs into 80s-flavoured bangers, Kondak extracts ‘What A Time To Be Alive’ from the aforementioned album, working with O’Connor on a hard-hitting, nostalgic rework that’s out now. As a result, the track now assumes a smoother, more melodic and soothing character, truly embracing its sophisti-pop and synth-pop destiny. Robert O’Connor’s vocals also get polished further, elevating the overall record to its best shape yet.
The nostalgic lyricism in the song is the perfect match for its vibrant aural livery. Speaking about the inspiration behind it, the Irish creative explains: “In 2018, I was on my laptop the night before I went into the studio to record my single ‘No Second Chances’, and I went down a YouTube rabbit hole. I read a comment that said, ‘This song makes me miss the people I haven’t met’”.
