Described by NRK P3 as ‘Norway’s answer to the Kid Laroy’, 8lanco rises to our attention wrapped in unbelievable hype. Upon listening to his catalogue, it’s very obvious why. Boasting wonderfully dynamic and anthemic vocals, the talented Nordic creative crafts relatable mainstream gems with a highly international allure. ‘HILLS N’ BACK’ is the strongest evidence of that. 8lanco’s latest EP, the record collects five intense and catchy pieces, all testament to the Norwegian artist’s unwavering commitment to fresh, slick pop nuggets and evocative lyricism.
The references are rather global and familiar, with ‘HILLS N’ BACK’ embarking on glorious electro-pop tones with a strong commercial flair. ‘HELL OF IT’ opens the EP in style, with a fast-paced, fuzzy punk-pop anthem that feels bright, uplifting and energetic. ‘BLOW OUT THE MONITORS’ continues on the same theme, once again placing heightened attention to playful storytelling and groovy beats. ‘ACTRESS’ is more lenient on the project’s pop-rock side, with an elegant yet furious outlook. ‘JETLAG’ and ‘REHAB’ (also the focus track of the EP) take the record to a close through an evocative and melancholic character.
Now working frequently between Los Angeles and London, the Norwegian star appears ready for global recognition, and from what we have heard so far, it would be a well-deserved achievement. We reckon it’s just a matter of time.
