It’s been a while since we wrote about songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Richard Tyler Epperson. Since 2023, to be precise! Today, we found the Salt Lake City creative at a pivotal point in his career, and with a full album behind him, ‘Fragmented Night’. Eyes are on the future though, as Epperson kickstarts the new era of his project by releasing a kaleidoscopic cut, ‘One Thought Away’.
From a sonic standpoint, ‘One Thought Away’ takes a very different path than its predecessors, distancing itself from the acoustic intimate pop that found an outlet in ‘The Open Book Sessions’. Instead, the new single embraces Epperson in his full-band livery, delivering an electrifying, kinetic gem that weaves its way around hip-hop, rock, and pop influences. Richard’s vocals are a joy to listen to, able to shifts from poignant tenderness to hard-hitting charisma at a moment’s notice.
Delving deeper into the creative ethos that propels ‘One Thought Away’, Epperson explains: “I had been kicking this song around for about a year because I was never completely happy with how it sounded. Coming back to it after some time changed the way I heard it. I simplified the first half, removed a bunch of things, but allowed the ending to be chaotic. I realized some of that contrast is what makes the song work.”
