REYA Returns with Eclectic, Boundary-Pushing Jewel ‘supersize’

Advancing her eclectic, cross-cultural brand of luscious alt-pop, producer and visionary REYA has recently returned with a peculiar cut, ‘supersize’.

Ok! Listen, we hear you: the constant need for new music can feel exhausting at times, and honestly, there’s not a lot of interesting stuff happening nowadays. Unless… unless one looks closer at what’s happening across Europe. Besides your run-of-the-mill pop actors, there are a group of bold, eclectic creatives blurring the boundaries between cultures and genres. REYA is one such figure: based in London, but with roots in Norway and Spain, the talented producer and visionary has developed an aural character that’s sonically rich and lyrically trilingual.

‘supersize’ is the perfect evidence of that. Marking REYA’s return to the global music landscape after being absent since last summer’s ‘act right’, the record introduces itself with a certain flamenco allure, hypnotising listeners with Spanish-coded folklore and highly cinematic flair. REYA’s vocals float over such aural goodness with cathartic, luscious elegance, before exploding into brooding, hard-hitting alt-pop production. ‘supersize’ feels rather fresh and unique, and in a way it manages to embrace its leftfield side while remaining in a fairly familiar pool of influences.

It’s a perfect marriage of intents, something that summarises REYA’s creative ethos as a whole. Sung both in English and Spanish, ‘supersize’ draws inspiration from the likes of Naïka and Lana Luban, among others, and features production by REYA herself. We are surely impressed by her upward trajectory and compositional maturity. She’s one to look out for; this is merely the beginning.
