Following up on their debut effort ‘DIVE IN’, American dream pop and grunge duo Reality Distortion have recently returned with ‘Rat Race’, a piece that further expands on the group’s unique sonic premise and expressive lyricism. Blending cinematic, ethereal and dreamy textures with gritty guitar tones and grunge-flavoured punch, the record does a good job of illustrating the fundamental duality shared by Reality Distortion.
One could trace such duality to the extreme, perhaps tying it to the Saratoga Springs-based pair being a sibling duo. Whichever way you look at it, the project seems to flourish on constant tension, a constant push-and-pull between two opposing sides – yet sharing the same overall ethos. Eventually, such a unique formula works incredibly well, as ‘Rat Race’ charmingly showcases. Developing with a certain minimalism, the single leaves ample space for Reality Distortion’s collective vocals, adding a plethora of distorted textures and electronic beats in the process.
Perhaps ‘Rat Race’ is more dream pop than it is gritty and gunge-y. What matters is that ‘Rat Race’ is the point of arrival of a decade-long process, where the talented musicians behind Reality Distortion were able to slowly sculpt a distinct and authentic sound. Delving deeper into the record, they explain: “The track is an invitation to leave behind the mundane and dare to dream again.”
