Reality Distortion Return with Gritty Dreaminess in ‘Rat Race’

Following up on their debut effort ‘DIVE IN’, American dream pop and grunge duo Reality Distortion have recently returned with ‘Rat Race’, a piece that further expands on the group’s unique sonic premise and expressive lyricism. Blending cinematic, ethereal and dreamy textures with gritty guitar tones and grunge-flavoured punch, the record does a good job of illustrating the fundamental duality shared by Reality Distortion

One could trace such duality to the extreme, perhaps tying it to the Saratoga Springs-based pair being a sibling duo. Whichever way you look at it, the project seems to flourish on constant tension, a constant push-and-pull between two opposing sides – yet sharing the same overall ethos. Eventually, such a unique formula works incredibly well, as ‘Rat Race’ charmingly showcases. Developing with a certain minimalism, the single leaves ample space for Reality Distortion’s collective vocals, adding a plethora of distorted textures and electronic beats in the process.

Perhaps ‘Rat Race’ is more dream pop than it is gritty and gunge-y. What matters is that ‘Rat Race’ is the point of arrival of a decade-long process, where the talented musicians behind Reality Distortion were able to slowly sculpt a distinct and authentic sound. Delving deeper into the record, they explain: “The track is an invitation to leave behind the mundane and dare to dream again.”
