Pitching his latest single ‘NOTHA 1 DOWN (mini)’, Namibian rapper Proklaim brings up an important, crucial point. “I wanted it to be extremely short, as attention spans have been shortened by social media”. In fact, the record is incredibly bite-sized, even by modern standards. Clocking in at one minute and fifteen seconds, the track feels intense, hard-hitting, and sleek; everything is condensed in a memorable, relatable format.
Also made for “car trunks”, ‘NOTHA 1 DOWN (mini)’ takes a minimalist approach to its production. You see, while the piece is introduced by rather cinematic textures, the main body of the track includes a striking hip-hop beat and Proklaim’s bold rap flow on top of it. Basically, you have just beats and vocals, which is what matters the most at the end of the day. That makes a lot of sense when relating to car trunks; audio fidelity might not be the best, and Proklaim makes sure the message – and its impact – arrives regardless.
Recorded at Pen Pushaz Studios and engineered at Audio Art Namibia by Wojtek Majewski, ‘NOTHA 1 DOWN (mini)’ is perhaps an unconventional offering, yet it’s consistent with what Proklaim has showcased in the past couple of years: commitment to his craft and the willingness to innovate, finding new angles through which he can express himself.
