It’s time the world reckons with Max Barskih’s impressive, boundary-breaking artistry. A gifted Ukrainian popstar, Barskih is rather famous in his home country, with millions of followers on social media platforms and an equal amount of streams on Spotify alone. Yet, he never quite dipped into the global pop landscape, instead focusing on writing in Ukrainian. Now, the Kyiv-based creative is seen expanding his audience, reaching out to overseas shores with a powerful and inspiring piece in English, ‘Stomach Butterflies’.
Anticipating a wonderful album targeted to foreign markets, ‘Stomach Butterflies’ feels incredibly evocative and cathartic, with Barskih exposing the difficulties of existing amidst a ferocious invasion; despite the pain and difficulties, Max celebrates Ukrainian resilience while showcasing the deep-rooted trauma that such events are likely to instill on his fellow countrymen and women. It’s a bittersweet tune; beautiful and nuanced, yet inspired by a dark, overwhelming reality.
‘Stomach Butterflies’ comes with a stunning video directed by Alan Badoev. Speaking about the reasoning behind the single and the upcoming album, Barskih explains: “Our people inspire me! The greatest strength of Ukrainians is their ability to live. The war has not broken this spirit. Even amid constant shelling, our compatriots continue to build their future, grow, and love. I want the world to see this strength.”
