Perenna King Unleashes Her Anger at the System in ‘Alibi’

Prior to writing this article, we took a deep dive into Perenna King’s artistic universe. Boasting four successful and well-received singles, the New York-based songstress has so far showcased a natural gift for striking, hard-hitting lyricism, songs that are relatable and steeped in contemporary societal and political issues. Having amassed a sizeable audience across social media and streaming services, the talented and boundary-pushing visionary is now returning with a reflective and meaningful banger, ‘Alibi’.

Following up on previous effort ‘Billionaire’, ‘Alibi’ adopts a slower, more cinematic approach, building a charming alt-pop gem with an extensive theatrical flair and catchy, potent melodies. Perenna King doesn’t restrain herself from writing honest, politically-charged lyricism, with the new record exploring the emotional and physical toll of the Roe v. Wade reversal, an action that dismantled decades of abortion rights while bearing devastating consequences for the whole of the US.

King does a masterful job here, managing to pack the single with haunting and fierce character, never descending into evocative and emotional territories. That’s the key to understanding Perenna: she’s not submissive, not even grieving. Simply, she stands tall and proud, telling everyone how it is. Speaking in detail about the message in the song, she explains: “It tells the story of women forced to seek healthcare across state lines, fighting against both church and state to reclaim autonomy over their bodies.”
