An uplifting, feel-good effort, ‘First of the Month’ is a wonderful example of what American outfit Paulo and the Problems are capable of. Guided by head honcho Paulo Ward and framed into Fogwood Records’ talent incubator, the project is rather eclectic and striking, echoing the likes of Bruno Mars and Anderson.Paak, among others. A three-dimensional creative, musician and audio engineer, Ward is the beating heart behind the music, teaming up with fellow producer and label mate Saynave to deliver an euphoric, charming nugget of confidence and liberation.
That’s exactly what ‘First of the Month’ stands for. Built on soulful, R&B-flavoured territories, the record does a good job of oscillating between elegant nostalgia and contemporary energy, making for a listening experience that’s rich and vibrant, never obvious and – more importantly – fully commanding the listener’s attention, from the first to the last note. The bass is luscious and groovy, perfectly enhanced by an array of percussion and drums that take us back to the 70s.
Funky-laden goo and sharp, warm vocals – what more could you wish for? Perhaps an album! Paulo and the Problems are set for an upcoming LP release, ‘Stupid Sexy Paulo’, expected later this year. What’s more, ‘First of the Month’ features an animated music video “starring the band’s dog mascot, Nico, who will appear throughout the rollout in a series of nostalgic cartoon visuals.”
