We are always positively surprised by Ooberfuse. The London-based duo is a genuine creative entity, championing a kaleidoscopic outlook on music and a keen willingness to write about controversial and politically driven topics. The group’s material benefits from meaningful lyricism and often striking, unapologetic themes, songs written to spark reflections in any receptive listener. Such an honourable artistic mission is today more relevant than ever, as Ooberfuse’s latest effort ‘Better Than Gold’ clearly showcases.
In it, Cherrie Anderson and Has St Jon team up with Filipino rap collective Tugista to expose the rampant political corruption in the Asian country, especially at a national level. Plagued by a series of top-level scandals, the Philippines is experiencing treacherous political waters and heightened societal inequalities. Striving to make a difference, Ooberfuse and Tugista built an eclectic hip-hop piece featuring Filipino-language bars and Anderson’s catchy and evocative English choruses. Both Tugista and Cherrie share common roots in Tondo city.
Delving deeper into the record, Ooberfuse explain: “Forget the love songs and the flexing. Real music claws at the throat of power. We’re dragging corruption out of the boardrooms and into the beat. Working with Tugista, hearing their truth, this is not some abstract political debate. This is the sound of evil proliferating in daily life. Demanding accountability isn’t a choice; it’s a moral obligation. This track is that obligation, weaponised.”
