Packing limitless charisma and a sultry, playful lyricism, Noah Kahlil is firmly on his way to wider recognition. Blending relatable hip-hop character with more oblique, neo-soul-flavoured elements, the Los Angeles-based creative has managed to create a rather vaporous, legendary brand for himself, a strategy that appears to have paid off, so far. ‘Candy’ is Kahlil’s latest effort; oscillating towards the project’s bouncier side, the track is an uplifting, groovy slice of dreamy euphoria.
Evoking neon-lit, moody night vibes, the single is rather short in its execution, barely reaching two minutes. It’s plenty for such a striking and catchy track, wrapping the listeners into a bubbly, inflatable-filled sonic universe that’s elegant yet vibrant. In fact, ‘Candy’ fits perfectly the description we have been given for Noah: “eccentricity, attitude, and psychedelia”. In other words, eclecticism and gusto, with Kahlil not afraid to delve into the unconventional.
Widening the lyricism behind the song, the American visionary explains: “A subtle feminist narrative that explores the mutuality of the proverbial ‘roster’ side-stepping the patriarchal man-must-make-first-move/women can’t-be-sexually-empowered narratives.” The contrast between the unsuspectingly bright production and the meaningful songwriting provides another interesting angle on the project – one that takes boldness and intelligence to pull off.
