There’s been a keen buzz around néomí, at least in the past year. Something is drawing people into her music, and as we approach the project’s latest single, ‘Didn’t I’, that something is immediately clear. Incredibly heartfelt and cathartic, néomí’s music manages to be both tender and melancholic, an alt-folk, pop-leaning journey into human nature and keen introspection. In particular, ‘Didn’t I’ appeals to us because of its dreamy, evocative lyricism framed against a more rowdy and distorted backdrop, always maintaining the overall folk allure that’s foundational to the whole project.
Out now via Nettwerk, ‘Didn’t I’ represents a triumphant milestone for the Dutch-Surinamese songstress. Delving deeper into the song, néomí explains: “Didn’t I’ is a song about an inevitable kind of love, one that you wish in the end didn’t happen at all. It’s about being in a difficult relationship where you are being held responsible for your partner’s repeated attempts to sabotage things. You’re left wondering: ‘Did I do enough?’ or ‘Was I enough?’ – when in fact, those are the questions they should be asking themselves.”
For anyone interested, néomí is set for a string of live dates in the Netherlands and Berlin this October.
