There’s a lot to unpack in ‘Tellus’. The latest single by Denver-based creative Nate Todd, the piece is not just ‘a track’. It’s part of a layered, larger body of work, in turn part of Todd’s highly meaningful and purposeful artistic ethos. Taken from a forthcoming album, ‘Tellus’ is rather otherworldly and psychedelic, a character that well fits the sci-fi-driven lyricism and the metaphorical potent imagery behind the song. Drawing a parallel with a dystopian future, Nate describes a planet Earth in ruins, where one bold figure longs for the old, lost times.
That’s a striking tale, one that well fits our powerless descent into an irreversible climate crisis. Todd’s vocals are soaked in reverb and ethereal textures, making for a distant, floating voice, one that sounds prophetic, yet deeply nostalgic. Drawing inspiration from his favourite band King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, ‘Tellus’ and its larger album are part of a three-part trilogy, including Whiskey Tango’s (Todd’s former band) Crystal Hotel (2016) and his solo release Empty City (2024).
Delving deeper into the ethos behind ‘Tellus’, Nate explains: “I wrote the song with the theme of an unrecognisable Earth in mind. Although the record journeys through space, it is ultimately about our home, Earth. ‘Tellus’ is my love letter to this planet that I love so much, and a warning to those who disrespect it.”
