A quirky, whimsical and imaginative record, ‘Tellus’ marks our point of entry into Nate Todd’s expansive artistic universe. His music is certainly not ordinary, a mixture of sci-fi allure, futuristic sound design and cosmic-driven cinematic textures. The word ‘cinematic’ is rather key here, with the Denver-based creative being very well versed in film studies. It goes without saying that ‘Tellus’ is heavily inspired by sci-fi imagery and otherworldly storytelling.
There’s a common thread in Nate’s work, as he builds a trilogy of albums that’s been in the making for almost a decade. ‘Tellus’ follows up from Todd’s past releases ‘Crystal Hotel’ (2016) and ‘Empty City’ (2024). The former was inspired by Western movies, while the latter takes a cue from Noir films. This is particularly crucial because it showcases the adaptability and freedom of expression behind Todd’s creative vision, especially on a musical level.
Delving deeper into ‘Tellus’, Nate explains: “Perhaps the most dire problem we face now is: how will humans adapt to climate change? Because we seem incapable, or unwilling, to stop it. One of my biggest influences on Tellus, and in general, is King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. I’ve always loved how those guys use their metal albums to address a rapidly warming planet. There’s something about thrash that drives home the notion that we are fucked unless we take some drastic measures.”
