Incredible things are happening in the jazz scene right now. Thanks to the arrival of a new generation of bold, eclectic musicians, what was once a traditionalist, rigid genre has now bloomed into a hypnotic bouquet of influences and innovative formulas. Is it still the jazz we all knew and love? Perhaps. As harmonic and melodic idioms evolve, old labels and categories might fall short; yet, the genre’s improvisative and open-ended character is still greatly present, and that’s where Swiss creatives muralim most excel at.
A group of highly talented musicians, the Zurich-based quintet led by saxophonist Mauro Reimann is gently gearing up for an upcoming album, ‘pony’, set for release this October. On their way to it, muralim have unveiled the latest piece of the puzzle, ‘one of Us’, a wondrous, elegant and hypnotic piece featuring gifted vocalist Lidia Beck (Lost in Lona). In it, we confidently embrace the group’s enhanced dynamism and poised musicianship, as they drive a listening experience that’s heartwarming and classy, one that’s drenched in pop and soul tinges.
Emerging from the fertile creative scene around Zurich University of the Arts, muralim has already been noticed by a keen public out there, with the project winning the audience award at the Montreux Jazz Residency, among other achievements.
