A cryptic, leftfield offering, ‘I want to make her happy’ is an impressive EP, especially for the degree of enlightened electronica in it. Borrowing from a wide variety of sources, Swiss producer and creative MrMessy crafts three unique pieces, all packed with pointillistic synth work, noisy sound design and abstract atmospheres, not to forget the Aphex Twin-esque grooves and glitches. They were surprisingly written years ago, and only now they have resurfaced, showcasing how MrMessy may have dedively been ahead of his time.
There’s a curious origin story behind the EP. It involves broken hard drives, years of mourning and storage, and a willing assistant. This is how it starts: “MrMessy had been sitting for years on his electronica-inspired songs. Like an alchemist, he was searching for a golden musical formula. And he found it, though he couldn’t remember exactly how.” When disaster struck, and the hard drive broke, the Swiss talent focused on working for other bands and artists, seemingly forgetting about his past work.
“In 2013, a young assistant, who had recently been hired to work for MrMessy’s Foodcorner Studio, found a dusty and yellowed box in the catacombs of the studio. And in this box were the almost forgotten remains of the songs of MrMessy. We dusted off the old box, repaired the hard drive with renewed enthusiasm, and revived the songs!” Luckily, we can now enjoy ‘I want to make her happy’ in all its unexpected greatness. Frankly, it’s an intricate, witty record, one that needs time to be fully understood and digested. Yet, one that’s bound to be very rewarding too.
