I do feel privileged, having covered MothBreath earlier this year. Their record are always a pleasant surprise, a concoction of dreamy, ethereal tones and shoegaze decadence, all then delivered home by expansive, spacious and cathartic vocals. ‘Brand New’ saw the British duo “delving deep into their bucolic side” – as I previously described it. ‘Freedom Machine’ doubles down on the same formula, merely raising the intensity of cinematic soundscapes and shimmering guitars.
Mothbrath’s latest single, ‘Freedom Machine’ is introduced by a noisy, intimate electronic beat, then greatly overpowered by a tapestry of long synths and effects. As always, John Libert does a great job on the production and guitars, perfectly complemented by Kirsty Dougall’s naturally lush and elegant vocals. She’s the real deal, wrapping ‘Freedom Machine’ in a cascade of cathartic lyricism and otherworldly imagery.
In fact, it’s Kirsty herself giving the track its hopeful meaning. The English songstress reaffirms her love for cycling, explaining how she was set to cycle from the UK to Japan in 2020, a plan that had to subside to the COVID pandemic instead. Overall, ‘Freedom Machine’ is a record I incredibly enjoy, and I look forward to finding out what’s next for the Frome-based duo.
