We welcome MothBreath back on our blog with a certain excitement. You see, it’s quite a big year for them; the British duo is gearing up to release their sophomore album just after the summer. Being familiar with Kirsty and John’s dreamy, ethereal aural charge, we sort of know what to expect, although we never discount the variety of influences and direction they could be moving towards. ‘Summer Dreaming’ EP offers a palatable preview of what’s to come, a collection of hazy and evocative singles set to provide an escapism-driven companion for the upcoming sunny season.
It’s rather perfect for us, after all, we call ourselves Mesmerized for a reason. A blog like ours highly values anything melancholic and brooding, also finding comfort in inward reflection. MothBreath shares the same sentiment, although with a much more celestial and eclectic outlook on it. Packed with four luscious episodes, ‘Summer Dreaming’ EP is the perfect evidence of it. The title track introduces the record with John Libert’s sombre guitar tones and Kirsty Dougall’s hypnotic, malleable vocals, then jumping into atmospheric trip-hop and dream-pop/shoegaze lands.
What follows is a triumphant walk into electronic beats and chill, reverb-coded soundscapes, with ‘Sometimes I Run’ sharing a strikingly haunting flair, quite crepuscular and alternative. Delving deeper into the record, MothBreath explain: “It’s an ethereal, trippy longing for those long balmy never-ending summer nights.”
