The keen reader might remember Moon Construction Kit thanks to an article we published earlier this summer, praising ‘Down The West Coast’ as “rejoicing in malleable and bittersweet baroque melodies”. A theme seems to be emerging, with Lausanne-based writer, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Olivier Cornu now unveiling ‘Right Across the USA’, a lyrically like-minded piece, though it moves into rockier, grittier sonic territories.
Channelling old-school power-pop with hints of indie epicness, ‘Right Across the USA’ features a rather hazy mix by Guy Britton. The balance between electronic textures and guitars is quite sublime, with everything sharing a certain spaciousness. That’s exactly what we love about the track, which, to be fair, does share a keen affinity for dream-pop and shoegaze. Yet… labels are not beneficial in this case: Moon Construction Kit is busy building his own unique, hypnotic aural universe, and we are here for it.
From a lyrical standpoint, ‘Right Across The USA’ embodies Oliver’s nostalgia for a version of the States that’s perhaps been lost nowadays. As Cornu explains: “Right Across The USA is a fast, high-energy power-pop track about connection and separation. Beneath that drive, there’s a distance fuelling nostalgia for the American culture I grew up on.” Overall, it’s a timely release, a song that showcases MCK’s observant and critical songwriting flair. It’s good to know he’s reacting to the reality around him in a truly artistic way.
