Following up on the previous single ‘Snake Charmer’, Moon Construction Kit has recently returned with the next chapter of his triumphant artistic journey, ‘Down the West Coast’. It’s a truly remarkable offering, one that sheds further light on the Lausanne-based creative’s expansive eclecticism. In it, we are confronted with a more crepuscular and brooding psychedelic aura, one that wraps MCK’s vocals in celestial vapour and dreamy energy. What more could you wish for?
Partly nostalgic, ‘Down the West Coast’ rejoices in malleable and bittersweet baroque melodies, the sort of enlightened material that will appeal to any introspective listener out there. It’s also incredibly well-produced, with a spacious allure pushing the whole record into alt-folk territories, as well as a certain orchestral affinity that marks the Swiss talent as a true virtuoso, intelligent composer.
Delving deeper into the meaningful ethos that propels the single, Moon Construction Kit explains: “With ‘Down the West Coast,’ I really wanted to pay homage to that specific ’67–’71 Beach Boys era—the kind of music that feels like a sun-drenched, baroque journey. We combined 50s-inspired woodwinds with an orchestral ‘Chamber-Pop’ structure to create a sound that is as much about the arrangement as it is about the mood”. Mission achieved: the record feels incredibly escapism-coded and hypnotic.
