Drenched in otherworldly textures and liminal grooves, the record offers a striking leftfield experience, wrapping listeners into liquid beats and a wealth of vocal harmonies, here delivered by Monstera Black’s enchanting tone. The project’s identity is a tad nebulous, but to be fair, that adds to its life-changing allure.
Emerging from the shadows as a hypnotising artistic entity, Monstera Black is often seen walking the fine line between the club world and experimental pop, something that’s heavily on display in ‘Mixed Messages’, although with a leftfield twist. Frequent collaborator and acclaimed producer alys(alys)alys adds a wealth of aural catharsis, allowing us to lose ourselves in the record fully.
Speaking about the piece, Monstera Black explains: “The track dives into the distorted idea of digital intimacy. It’s the first release of my EP Trojan Horse, with a sound that nods to artists like Kelela, Erika De Casier, and early FKA Twigs.”
