The keen reader might remember Mono Martian from a series of past features. We have been following the Norwegian pop-rocker for a while, with ‘In a Different Kind of Light’ being the most recent episode of it. Celebrated as “a relaxed and breezy atmosphere that sucks you in and refuses to let go”, the single was rather mellow and elegant. Now, Mono Martian is back with his latest effort ‘Run Me Over’, a piece that scrambles the sonic picture a fair bit, finding a worthy refuge in uplifting and slick pop-rock territories.
Even among such an upbeat record, the relatability and melodic charge of Nordic songwriting is ever-present, a quality that showcases Jørgen Landhaug’s nuanced lyricism and meaningful outlook. Themed around romantic storytelling, ‘Run Me Over’ flourishes on anthemic choruses and unforgettable hooks, making the track quite a catchy standout. As a bonus, the record features backing vocal bits from Mono Martian’s daughter, Iris Stardust, adding to Landhaug’s grounded, malleable tone.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, Mono Martian explains: “It’s about being disarmed by connection. That kind of connection that turns your world upside down, and you’re fully in it: sincere, shaken, and wide open. ‘Run Me Over’ is love in freefall.” We can definitely get behind such a powerful message of love and attraction, especially during our gloomy, melancholic times.
