The keen reader might remember American rocker Miller Tracy from a feature we published earlier in the summer, celebrating ‘Love is Adamant’ as “a nugget of charming fuzziness, rolling drums, and overdriven vocals”. While that was Tracy at its loudest and boldest, we now find the Chicago-based singer and songwriter delving into lighter folk territories, penning a tune that well fits the quaint autumn that’s taking us towards the end of the year. ‘With John’ is the perfect evidence of Miller’s gentler side, also embracing a wondrous, elegant flair that’s packed with a fable-like sense of grandeur.
Part theatrical and part dramatic, ‘With John’ is exactly what we would expect from Tracy. Oscillating between whimsical storytelling and fierce rock tones, the track showcases the project’s overall ambivalence, with the American creative taking us all on a musical roller-coaster, one that we won’t be forgetting anytime soon. It’s even psychedelic at times, truly taking charge of the Halloween season, seemingly.
Delving deeper into the inspiration behind the piece, Miller Tracy explains: “The verses had this eerie, enchanting quality to it, and I knew I wanted the lyrics to be cut from the same cloth, something strange and unusual, but it took some time for that to reveal itself.” Overall, ‘With John’ is another adventurous, daring release from Tracy.
