True songwriting takes years to perfect. Michael Landgarten knows that very well, having pursued the joy of music-making for the better part of his youth. Navigating his local music scene with pride and relative success – especially around Portsmouth, New Hampshire – the talented troubadour developed a longstanding history of militance in blues and folk outfits, only to then walk away from it all, pulled by the chaos of ordinary life. Well, Landgarten is now back on his merry ways, as ‘Back To You’ boldly showcases.
Aptly titled, ‘Back To You’ celebrates Michael’s return to the music scene. He doesn’t seek to reinvent the wheel; instead, he finds refuge in what he’s always done best: blues, rock’n’roll, and the occasional folk and Americana incursion. Featuring ten stunning pieces, the record is a triumph of electrifying choruses, fuzzy distortions and intimate, honest songwriting moments, all showcasing the artistic depth enjoyed by the American troubadour.
Introduced by ‘Come Tomorrow’, the album finds his winning notes on gently uplifting melodies, familiar licks, and Landgarter’s elegant, dynamic vocals, here delivered with immense charisma and tone control. Follow-up ‘But I Do’ finds a groovier, more minimalist ethos, yet somehow still provides a wonderfully anthemic and catchy chorus. Those are all themes that will emerge frequently throughout the whole album – it’s that good.
