I must admit, at first I wasn’t totally convinced by ‘Lexi Loves Me’; I struggled to understand Queen Anne’s aural vision. Yet, once the chorus hit, everything started to make sense. Calling themselves an indie band, Katie Silverman and Sandy Chila are much more than that. From what we observe in ‘Lexi Loves Me’ – but also in their previous single ‘Real Enough’ – the project borrows heavily from early ‘2000s pop influences, then framing them into a playful, lush and dreamy indie-pop livery. Queen Anne’s musical output is both familiar and elegant, but also carefree and fresh.
‘Lexi Loves Me’ is the perfect evidence of that. Introduced by slightly gloomy and guitar-laced verses, the song then explodes into a blissfully cinematic pop triumph, echoing a Lana Del Rey on her best day. In fact, Silverman’s vocals are equally great: dynamic, evocative, and with a certain innocent quality to them… The tension between their indie edge and their comfy and catchy pop side is thrilling, uplifting and even euphoric.

Now, take what we have written above with a pinch of salt. If one were to use ‘Real Enough’ as a reference, a great deal of 80s post-punk and new wave influences would come into play. Meaning, Queen Anne are who they want to be, at any given time; do not try to capture them in a glass jar, labelling them indie-pop and stacking them on a shelf. It’s a project that constantly evolves, that breathes and lives. They listen to their favourite records and allow themselves to be captivated by a highly musical sense of wonder.
Delving deeper into the lyrical side of ‘Lexi Loves Me’, Silverman explains: “‘Lexi Loves Me is about that sick, desperate feeling in the pit of your stomach, rather than the specifics of the relationship or the expired sushi that brought you there. To me, the song is about a person pulling away from a relationship because they’re having a metaphorical affair with their own mental health, because those are the kinds of things that have been on my mind.”
