Meat in Space Champions Lo-Fi Punk in Debut Effort ‘Chromium Dioxide’

A fierce creative based in the Bay Area, Meat in Space champions a genuine down-to-earth outlook on his artistry. Crafting gritty, lo-fi and accessible punk, the Californian talent possesses a strong DIY aesthetic, pairing perfectly with the homemade nature of his compositions. This week, the project debuts with ‘Chromium Dioxide’, a coarse, fuzzy and unregulated punk gem with emphasis on understated vocals and repetitions. Although it might appeal to everyone, the single is a perfect example of how one doesn’t need fancy equipment and the latest tech to deliver meaningful music. Meat in Space goes to the source, preferring pure, unfiltered art to artificial and complex matter.

A talented multi-instrumentalist, Shawn Stedman (AKA Meat in Space) explores the world of analogue sound, experimenting with various sonic sources and recording techniques. Drawing influence from 90s heavyweights such as Dinosaur Jr., Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins, as well as a plethora of neighbouring genres such as shoegaze, punk and stoner rock, ‘Chromium Dioxide’ was created on a cassette 4-track at Meat in Space’s mom’s house in Ohio, before being upgraded to a cassette 8-track and completed with bass, drums and additional vocals.

Lyrically, the track seeks to be a commentary on the concept of cognitive bias, exploring the idea that people often do the bare minimum of research to validate their beliefs and accept seemingly anything as proof.
