As we dive into ‘David’ EP, we are met with unexpected avant-garde allure. What we thought to be a relatively guitar-coded record soon blooms into something more layered and experimental, a deep dive into edgy post-punk, furious distortions, and brooding, dark cinematic atmospheres. It’s a formula that certainly resonates with us, one that showcases all of the bold artistry that Mazmere has to offer.
Based in the UK but originally from San Francisco, the talented writer and musician has now focused on a solo effort, one that draws inspiration from past experiences and distant memories. ‘David’ is the perfect evidence of that: dedicated to his late cousin, the track sees Jake Sinetos engaging in a warm yet quirky aural tribute, one that speaks volumes about the musical imagination behind the project. Further on, ‘Run – Live’ features Mazmere’s late drummer Rob James.
Delving deeper into the meaningful ethos that propels the EP, Sinetos explains: “I hadn’t planned for these songs to sit together, but looking at them now they seem to be connected by the same thing. They’re all reaching towards people who aren’t here anymore, trying to make sense of what’s left behind. This one’s for David and Rob.” We appreciate how such a leftfield and oblique EP can quickly gain a higher purpose. As such, we should perhaps consider it one of Jake’s most personal and authentic bodies of work.
