Tender, introspective, and meaningful: ‘Inventing Something’ uncovers Marianne Joyce’s hypnotic folk artistry while offering a striking reflection on Queer love and personal identity. In a way, it’s a deeply honest and authentic effort by the British songstress. Drawing from her own journey into self-discovery and acceptance, the piece takes a rather historical approach to Queer relationships, celebrating the urgency and intensity of every romantic exchange from the past and present. In the eyes of lovers, every romance is absolutely special and unique.
Tracing the inspiration of such a witty lyrical theme, Joyce explains: “It’s a reference to the 2019 French film Portrait of a Lady on Fire, in which one of the characters delivers the line: ‘Do you think all lovers feel as though they’re inventing something?’”. We have to say, ‘Inventing Something’ impresses us with its understated elegance: from the quirky and lovable songwriting to the gentle Folk tones, everything speaks volumes about the kind of nuanced and unconventional artistry Marianne has to offer.
Crowning it all, we find Joyce’s brooding vocals, constantly creeping with emotional charge, yet also delivered with a certain restraint. It’s a balance of intents, one that makes ‘Inventing Something’ truly mesmerising and hazy. The single was recorded at Cube Recording Studio in Cornwall, produced by Gareth Young and Ross Rothero-Bourge, with guitar by instrumentalist Lukas Drinkwater. Spoiler alert: there’s an EP on the way. It truly is Marianne Joyce’s year.
