A bold political piece, ‘Delay Deny Depose’ takes a playful yet unapologetic approach to one of the most controversial events in recent US history, doing so with a nostalgic and catchy musical motif and a striking Mario Bros-style video. The event in question is the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last year, and with Luigi Mangione’s trial coming up (the alleged shooter), NYC punk hero Make Believe Love aligns himself with Mangione’s cause, skillfully navigating popular culture with a strikingly witty flair.
Known by day as Lucas Berman, Make Believe Love packs ‘Delay Deny Depose’ with a healthy amount of fuzzy guitars and relatable melodic riffs, all drenched in an overall cartoonish livery. Such a record goes well with the accompanying video, using Luigi’s name as a parallel with the popular videogame Mario Bros – hence the Nintendo-flavoured visuals. The track has been produced by Louie Diller (of HOLYCHILD).
