Maijah Evokes Main Character Energy in ‘Sinking/Floating’

Maijah is rather adamant about what she stands for. Describing her artistic endeavour as ‘Main Character Music’, she reveals a helpful clue for decoding her musical output. You see, the Los Angeles-based songstress moves with intention and charisma, penning first-person songs that are incredibly vivid and relatable – as if we were following main characters in a movie, working through their issues. ‘Sinking/Floating’ are the perfect example of that, an explosive double single and mini-EP that marks Maijah’s latest release.

‘Sinking’ opens the record with its retro-infused soundscapes and a nuanced cinematic flair. As the track develops, its contemporary pop livery emerges in full glory, with a hazy, fuzzy electronic production that’s a joy to listen to. It’s also the perfect match for Maijah’s towering, intense vocals. ‘Floating’ follows suit with a more expansive and dreamy production, still carrying hidden melancholia and a sense of personal chaos – that’s what takes us to the rich lyrical layer, focusing on the cycles of ADHD and depression.

As Maijah explains, “It depicts the cycles of ADHD and depression; from the stagnancy of bedrot to overwhelm to dopamine spikes of motivation and back down to the crash of burnout. Both songs transition seamlessly into one another, creating a loopable, hyper-fixation worthy project you can’t help but repeat.”
