Melbourne-based producer and songwriter Maedream has recently returned with a very impressive effort, a slick, vibrant indie-coded pop piece that bodes very well for her future. ‘The Clear’ follows up on September’s debut release ‘Sirens’, slowly developing a project that enjoys a high degree of personal control. In fact, Maedream is adamant about being an audio engineer and music producer first and foremost.
‘The Clear’ starts off with minimalist resolve, a sparse bassline layered under Maedream’s charismatic yet controlled vocals. Suddenly, drums and electronic textures enter the sonic picture, with the record exploding into an alternative-pop wonder, one that’s both electrifying and expressive, always maintaining a strong sense of pride and self-reliance. We love the post-chorus guitar riff, very darkwave-inspired and alternative. Overall, ‘The Clear’ is a great example of the sort of musical eclecticism that guides the Aussie creative’s nuanced artistry.
Delving deeper into the meaningful ethos that propels the song, Maedream explains: “It explores the frustration and hurt of losing a friend after boundaries are crossed. I wrote and produced the track myself, building the production around punchy pop elements and emotionally direct lyrics to capture the anger, confusion and disappointment of the situation.” Mission achieved: ‘The Clear’ feels emotional and relatable without descending into heavy drama or melancholic territories. Instead, it preserves a fresh, contemporary allure, a feature that makes it a joy to listen to.
